TechTipTuesday was supposed to be about basic tech issues, however you can thank my busted site and my blogger friends for requesting all this SEO related information! lol Last week’s TechTipTuesday I told you Google+ matters for your SEO. This week I’m sharing how to beat Google at it’s own game using Google’s Webmaster Tools.
What is Google Webmaster Tools?
Google Webmaster Tools, GWT, is a free tool provided by Google that helps you understand what’s going on with your website. This tool can help you make decision for your website and SEO instead of venturing into uncharted territory. GWT basically shows you how Google sees your website and is a MUST HAVE for anyone serious about their SEO ranking. During one those night when I don’t sleep, I researched it and signed up for it months ago. I did not “fully” use the toolset until 2 weeks ago when a random conversation with SEO guru Luvvie and insomnia review led to the revelation that Google was not indexing my post . Pages and Categories were there, but not my post. I won’t get into why in this post because it would take too long. What I will say is today 3/4 of the post from my site has been indexed and my impressions and clicks have doubled/tripled in some case and I owe it to Google + and Google Webmaster Tools.
GWT Tools You Can Use
Sitemap for Indexing. If you are using WordPress SEO by Yoast, you can submit the sitemap it automatically creates. If you don’t have WordPress SEO by Yoast GET IT. Your sitemap tells Google how to read your site and will undoubtedly help your site get indexed quickly. GWT lets you know each time your sitemap is processed. As you can see, my recreated sitemap was submitted Aug 16 and was last process Aug 26.
Fetch as Google is a well kept secret that was EXTREMELY valuable in getting my site index quickly. Well maybe it’s not well kept, but I certainly did not know of it’s value until I had a problem. I could’ve been doing this MONTHS ago! LOL Fetch as Google is tool that actually sends the real googlebot to your site. The best part is the Submit to Index feature. This basically says “Hey Google, I have a new post” or “Hey Google, I have updated this old post crawl it again now.” Not saying this will be the case for one, but Google indexed my submitted post in about 5 MINUTES!!! How freaking awesome is that!!!!
This shot tells you the time I submitted the link to index via GWT. The time listed is PST time, so it’s really 11:25CST.
Look at the time stamp. 5 minutes later I checked and both links have been indexed!!! YES GAWD!!! This Fetch as Google feature is also good if your site is ever hacked or spammed. You will be able to see exactly how it is being read by google if the spammers have tricks!
If you have a google analytics account you should be able to setup your webmasters tool seemlessly. When setting up your account you want to make sure you add your blog with www. and without. This way to you tell google which way to show your site, another SEO point I learned.
Google Hangout for You!!
So many of you have asked for me to do a Google Hangout, being that I’m a Christian and Jesus said “it’s better to give, than to receive” I’m hosting a Google Hangout, along with Simona of GoodLooknOut, that will walk thought properly setting up your Google + Account AND setting up Google Webmasters Tools. The event is next Wednesday, after the holiday, at 9CST. SEO Trick and Tidbits using Google Products.
